Rome Architecture
Rome was very creative and had a lot of ways to build. They have lots of buildings that are famous for their difference. When there was a different building there was a different ruler or architect. The buildings you will learn about are the Colosseum, Pantheon, and Circus Maximas. We have used a lot of their inventions. Rome is famous for a lot of their buildings and is none from their rare designs.
The Colosseum is made of concrete and sand. Emperor Titus was the ruler that had it built for sacrifices and entertainment. The next ruler named Vespasian put gold and statues to the Colosseum. The Colosseum is like a football stadium and gladiators fought other gladiators or animals. There is trap doors under the battle grounds but know all you can see is the trap doors and maizes because the battle floor wore away.
Pantheon is built to be a church for their gods. It has statues with paint and decorations of their gods. The ruler Hadrien had it built. It is made of concrete and stone. The front looks like a temple but the back of it is a big dome and has a hole at the top. A cool fact about the dome is it is so tall that when it rains it go in the hole and doesn't touch the ground because the heat of the building.
The Circus Maximas is a chariot racing track. It is made of marble and stone. Lucius is the ruler who had it built. The main purpose of the Circus Maximas was for entertainment. You could race up to eight horses! If you won enough races you would get a wooden sword which meant that you are the champion and you would get really famous in Rome. The Circus Maximas looked like a race track.
Romans had good ideas for entertainment or religious buildings. We also use their ideas like domes, race track, stadiums, and how to make concrete. The Romans had to build every building hand by hand because they did not have machines. So that shows the how smart and precise they were. A cool thing about the Colosseum is that they had a chandelier that dropped at night battles. Now with machines we can make what they invented much quicker than they did.
